Tidings from the East
Greetings from the East Brethren. I hope that you have all had a wonderful and relaxing Christmas and New Year's holiday. We look out upon our 2016 Masonic year with great expectations and excitement to continue the most glorious work of Unity Lodge #18. The business meeting on January 6th will be an important one. We will be reviewing and voting on our 2016 budget. We will be conferring the Fellow Craft degree on Brother Adam Shepard on the January 13th, and do hope that all of the Brethren can attend.
Brotherly Love is the Principal Tenet of our Profession. It is the subject of the first instruction every Freemason receives. It is also one of the Great Truths, which can be deduced by the fact that the ritual disguises it; in this case by speaking of it in terms of alms-giving. Charity has nothing to do with alms-giving. It comes from the Latin word "caritas" which means "Love." Caritas is also the root of our verb "to care." Alms-giving may, from time to time, be a part of loving or caring but it is never the whole of it.
